"For some families, going on a family outing means packing a picnic basket and heading to the park. But for one mother and son, it means climbing one of the highest mountains in the world.
For Ben and Kristine Thompson of Honeoye Falls, that would be Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, on Africa's eastern coast.
The two are already experienced hikers. By the end of this summer they hope to have conquered all 46 Adirondack peaks, which Kristen describes as "rock-hopping, mud-slinging, got-to-pay-attention-to-your-surroundings" mountains. But even the tallest of those, 5,344-foot Mt. Marcy, is dwarfed by 19,341-foot Kilimanjaro."
